One for the Mums

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums I know – especially mine! For many years, my Mum was an avid reader of the Australian Women’s Weekly, so she got very excited yesterday when I was telling her about a new book on the fashions featured in this magazine across its first half-century of publication.

The Australian Women’s Weekly Fashion: the First 50 Years has just been published by the National Library of Australia and draws on their archives of the magazine from its beginnings in the 1930s (with the long, slim lines of those frocks and suits) through to the bombastic patterns of the 1970s (somehow they make all those polyester pieces look elegant) and all the bits I like best from the years in between.

Regular readers will know I have a thing for big pockets… and I’d LOVE one of these red skirts from this 1954 issue!

And isn’t this cover from 1949 just gorgeous?!
